Palworld became somewhat infamous upon its initial reveal for featuring guns, and while the thought of equipping your cuddly Pals with firearms might still seem excessive (or amusing, depending on your perspective), there’s no doubt that Gunpowder is one of the most important crafting materials in the entire game. You’ll need it if you want all those weapons glimpsed in the early Palworld trailers, from Assault Rifles to Rocket Launchers.
How to Get Gunpowder in Palworld?
You can get Gunpowder by defeating Tocotoco and crafting it from Charcoal and Sulfur.
Tocotoco is the only Palworld Pal who drops Gunpowder, and they’re also one of the best Neutral Pals in Palworld. Tocotoco’s Partner Skill is the formidable Eggbomb launcher, which fires explosive eggs at opponents. You’ll need to craft Tocotoco’s Gloves, which become available at Level 18, to utilize this Partner Skill.
Crafting gunpowder is fairly straightforward. You’ll need to be at least Level 21 on the Technology tree to unlock Gunpowder, and you’ll also need a High-Quality Workbench. For every Gunpowder you make, you’ll need two Charcoal and one Sulfur.

Gunpowder Farming and Crafting as a Palworld Beginner
When you’re Level 21 and ready to gather Gunpowder, you have two options – either defeat lots of Tocotocos or farm Charcoal and Sulfur.
Tocotoco can be found in the vicinity of the following Fast Travel locations: Investigator’s Fork, Sand Dunes Entrance, Duneshelter, and PIDF Tower Entrance. The easiest place to start is in the desert northeast of Investigator’s Fork, but keep in mind that you’ll need a Tropical Outfit or a Heat Resistant Pelt Armor to endure the desert’s heat.
Once you’re in the desert, you should see large flocks of Tocotoco wandering about. This unusual bird Pal doesn’t always drop Gunpowder and will sometimes give you Tocotoco Feathers instead. Nevertheless, there are enough Tocotoco in the area to make farming for Gunpowder fairly streamlined. If you’d rather not brave the desert, you can also hatch Tocotoco from a Common Egg and occasionally run into it in the Ravine Grotto and Cavern of the Dunes dungeons.
If you’d rather farm lots of Charcoal and Sulfur, then you can craft 1 Charcoal from 2 Wood via a Primitive Furnace, which unlocks at Level 10. Sulfur can be mined from yellow Sulfur nodes located in the same desert as all those wandering Tocotoco. Honestly, if you venture to the desert, you’ll be killing multiple birds with a single stone, in more ways than one!
Once you’ve got your Gunpowder, start crafting Coarse Ammo, which you’ll need to power what’s likely to be your first gun – a good old-fashioned Musket, which also unlocks at Level 21 and can be built at the Weapon Workbench.
Getting gunpowder will be another step in your progression in Palworld because it essentially marks the beginning of the next phase of your weapons. This resource is used to craft ammunition for various firearms and grenades, so it will be in constant demand in the mid to late game.
We have found 2 methods that gamers can use to get Gunpowder in Palworld, and the more difficult approach is arguably the most reliable option.
Kill or Catch Tocotoco
A time-consuming but suitable for beginners method of getting Gunpowder is to kill or catch a Tocotoco. This Pal spawns mainly in the desert, but we once met a flock of them not far from the teleport in Hypocrite Hill. Usually, it’s not of a high level, so you can easily defeat it in battle or catch it with Pal Spheres.
The main feature of a Tocotoco is that it can literally turn into a bomb if you get too close to it. The Pal will start ticking and chasing you, and if you can’t escape in time, you will probably die from the explosion.
You can also gain an advantage and kill this Pal faster if you do it this way. Fortunately, it’s not that difficult to escape from this Pal, so this method of acquiring Gunpowder is a great option if you’re out of arrows or ammo.
How to Craft Gunpowder
A quicker and easier alternative for more experienced players is to create Gunpowder manually. You can unlock the crafting recipe in the Technology tab once you reach level 21. Once this is done, you can craft Gunpowder on the High-Quality Workbench using the following resources:
- x1 Sulfur – Can be obtained by mining yellow Sulfur boulders in the desert or caves. Be sure to take care of heat protection when going into the desert to avoid overheating and dying.
- x2 Charcoal – Can be obtained by processing Wood into a Primitive or Improved Furnace at a 2 to 1 ratio.
We advise you to start stocking up on both resources even before you unlock Gunpowder because once you have accumulated a decent amount, you can provide yourself with ammo for a long period and not waste time on it later.
